The People's Republic of China commonly known as China, is the largest country in East Asia and the most populous in the world with over 1.3 billion people, approximately a fifth of the world's population. It is a socialist republic ruled by the Communist Party of China under a single-party system and has jurisdiction over twenty-two provinces, five autonomous regions, four municipalities, and two Special Administrative Regions. The capital of the PRC is Beijing.
At 9.6-million square kilometres, China (PRC) is the world's third largest country by its area after Russia and Canada.
It has a diverse landscape; in the north, near the PRC's borders with Mongolia and Russia's Siberia, the Gobi Desert and forest steppes dominate the dry expanse while lush subtropical forests grow along its southern borders with Vietnam, Laos, and Myanmar. The terrain in the west is rugged and high altitude, with the Himalayas and the Tian Shan mountain ranges forming the PRC's natural borders with India and Central Asia. In contrast, the PRC's eastern seaboard is low-lying and has a 14,500-kilometre long coastline bounded on the southeast by the South China Sea and on the east by the East China Sea beyond which lies Korea and Japan.
The Chinese border stretches over 22,000 kilometers on land and its coastline extends well over 18,000 kilometers, washed by the waters of the Bohai Sea, the Huanghai, the East China and the South China Seas. The Bohai Sea is China’s only inland sea. There are 6,536 islands larger than 500 square meters, the largest being Taiwan, with a total area of about 36,000 square kilometers, and the second, Hainan. The South China Sea Islands are the southernmost island group of China.
China is rich in tourism resources. The diverse landscapes, lakes, mountains, waterfalls, plains, brilliant history and culture, ancient tradition are altimate lure to travelers. Every year a large number of tourists at home and abroad are attracted to the numerous sights of the country. According to the forecasting of WTTC, Chinese tourism industry is supposed annually rising 10.4% in the coming decade. It is estimated by the World Tourism Organization that China will be the world’s largest tourist destination and the fourth largest country in tourists output by 2020.
Beijing is a metropolis in northern China and the capital of the People`s Republic of China. It is one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China. Beijing is China's second largest city, after Shanghai.
Beijing borders Hebei Province to its three sides - the north, west and south. To the southeast it borders Tianjin Municipality. The city covers 17020 square kilometers with a population currently 14 million.
Beijing is a major transportation hub, with dozens of railways, roads and motorways passing through the city. It is also the local point of many international flights to China. Beijing is recognized as the political, educational, and cultural center of the People's Republic of China, while Shanghai and Hong Kong predominate in economic fields. More than 140 foreign embassies are located here. It is also an international exchange center. The city hosted the 2008 Olympic Games.
Beijing has 3000 years of history. From the 12th century, Beijing had been serving as capitals of several Chinese dynasties for 800 years, from the Yuan Dynasty (1271 - 1368) to the Ming (1368 - 1644) and Qing (1644 - 1911) dynasties. Thirty-four emperors have lived and ruled the nation in Beijing and it has been an important trading city from its earliest days.
