The first mention of the city appeared in annals nine centuries ago in 1147. From the 13th century Moscow had been the centre of Principality, from the 14th century – the Grand duchy of Moscow. In the second part of the 15th century Moscow became the capital of the Russian State. In 1712 when the city Saint Petersburg was named the capital of the Russian State, Moscow kept the signification of the secondary capital. In 1918 Moscow became the capital of RSFSR in 1922-91 the capital of SSR and in 1991 the capital of the Russian Federation.

During many centuries Moscow plays the role of the national Russian culture`s centre. There are historical and architectural monuments: the Kremlin, the Novodevichi Monastery, the State University, the Arch of Triumph, the Memorial Monument of Victory located on the Mountain Poklonnaya and many others. The Temple of Christ of Saviour, the Doors of Kremlin` s Resurrection and the Temple of Kazan Mother located in Red Square had been reconstructed. Moscow is known by its museums, galleries and halls of Expo: the Gallery Tretiakov, the Pushkin's museum.
Moscow will impress you by the unique combination of the past and of the present - the bright colors of ancient monasteries and churches go along with the grey of Stalinist edifices and the modern architecture of banks and office buildings. Not without a reason Moscow is called a «City of gold domes»: the domes of Uspensky and Archangelsky cathedrals shine in the sun together with the domes of St. Basil’s and the Novodevichy Convent.
