Ulan Bator, Mongolia

Mongolia is located in the landlocked plateau of Central Asia between China and Russia. Mongolia covers an entire area of 1566500 square km, it takes the 15th place with its size in the world. Mongolia stretches about 2400 km from the west to the east and about 1260 km from the north to the south. The total length of the country` s borders is 8156 km. The total area of Mongolia is larger than the combined areas of Great Britain, France, Germany and Italy.
 
Mountains occupy 2/3 of the country` s territory. The highest summits of Mongolia are always covered by snow and ice. There are also humid meadows and steppe areas in the mountain zones. The famous desert Gobi occupies the biggest part of the south of Mongolia. About 10 % of the country is covered by forest in the north, near the Siberia. The most part of Mongolia are the steppes which pass to the Gobi desert in its dry territories.
 
Mongolia is the country with 250 sunny days in the year, blue and pure sky. January is the coldest month with an average temperature -35°C, July is the warmest month with an average temperature + 25°. Mongolia's climate is extremely continental with a small quantity of precipitations. The mean annual precipitation is 200 – 300 mm of which 80 to 90 % falls within five months (May to September). The daily temperature may fluctuate by 20°C-30°C.
 
With population of 3 millions people, Mongolia has one of the smallest Population density in the world - 1,5 person by 1 km ². Mongols make 85 % of the country total population. Official language is Mongolian with different dialects spoken across the country.
 
Ulan Bator, or Ulaanbaatar is the capital and largest city of Mongolia. The city is an independent municipality not part of any province, and its population as of 2008 is just over 1 million, 36.7 percent of the countries total population. Ulan Bator is located in the north central part of the country surrounded by four picturesque mountains. The Tuul river runs through the city from east to west. The total land area of approximately 4,700 square kilometers
 
The city was founded in 1639 as a Buddhist monastic centre and, in the 20th century, grew into a major manufacturing centre defined by its broad boulevards and squares and Socialist Classicist-style buildings.
 
Ulan Bator is the cultural, industrial, and financial heart of the country. It is a transport center, connected by highway to all the major towns in Mongolia and by rail to the Trans-Siberian Railway and Chinese railroad network.
 
Interesting sights in Ulaan Baatar include Gandan Monastery which is the largest and most significant monastery in Mongolia, Janraisig Temple, the Museum of Mongolian History which presents the history and culture of Mongols from ages as early as the Stone Age and up to the modern days, Choijin Lama Monastery which has a collection of masks used for the ceremonial Tsam dancing, the Art Gallery, Bogdo Khan Palace Museum – the former residence and monastery of  Bogd Khaan, Zaisan Memorial which is located on the hills and offering the best views of Ulaanbaatar.
