Ulan Ude excursions
City tour of Ulan Ude with visit to the Ethnographical Museum, 4,5 hours
During this tour you will see the historical center of Ulan Ude, you`ll know information about foundation of the city like a Cossack fortress. You`ll visit all main sights of Ulan Ude: the Square of Sovetov, the Lenin Square with a huge bust of Lenin which is the symbol of the city and the largest in the world, The Buryat State Opera and Ballet Theater, the Cathedral of Hodigitria – the old Russian church built in 1741, the Great Merchants`Rows – it is an architectural monument of the early 19 th century decorated with wood and stone carvings. Then you`ll go to the Ethnographical Museum of the People of Transbaikal region. The Ethnographical museum is one of the largest museums in the open air in Russia. Museum was opened in 1973, it is located 8 km from Ulan Ude and has 40 monuments of wooden architecture. The museum collections include the expositions on the history of ethnic groups living in the region: Evenks, Western Buryats, Eastern Buryats, Cossacks, Old Believers.
Excursion to Ivolginsky Buddhist Temple, 3 hours
Ivolginsky Datsan is the Buddhist Temple located in Buryatia, 30 km from Ulan Ude, near Verkhnyaya Ivolga village. The Datsan was opened in 1945 as a Buddhist spiritual center of USSR. Since 1991 The Ivolginsky Datsan is the the residence of Bandido Khambo Lama - the leader of the Buddhists in Russia. Spiritual activity of the datsan is manifested in temple rites, medical practice, Buddhist education traditional system. Buddhist university «Dashi Choinkhorling» was opened in 1991 attached to the datsan. Being a cultural and religion monument the Datsan is protected by the State. The Datsan Centre consists of such temples as Sockshin-gugan, Maidrin-sume, Devazhin and Sackhjusan-sume. There are also a library, hotel, the philosophic faculty - Choyra, building of the Buddhistic University - Dashy Choinhorlin, museum of monuments of Buryat art, sacred tumbs-suburgans, some service buildings and houses for lamas there. The best time to visit the monastery is between 9am and 11am, this way you will have a chance to see the monks in their morning prayers. The Ivolginsky Datsan usually attracts many pilgrims and tourist from all over the world.
Excursion to the village of Old Belivers, 6 - 7 hours
The Old Believers, the other name Semeiskiye as they are called in Siberia, make up a unique regional ethnic group. They appeared about 300 years ago, after a split of Russian Orthodox Church. The Old Belivers was divided into sects and some of sects were exiled to Siberia because they continued to worship in their old way. This excursion will allow you to visit the village of Old Belivers Tarbagatai. You`ll be amazed by wooden architecture of the village houses. You`ll visit museum created at the Monastery where you`ll see ancient things, icons, house utensils. You`ll enjoy a very beautiful folklore program showing by local people and Russian choral singing. You`ll have a lunch at one of the old beliver` s house, you`ll taste traditional Russian dishes such as: russian borsch, boiled potato roasted with fat, marinaded mushrooms, vegetable salads, berry pies, house kvass.
