Russia

Russia is the largest country in the world. It is situated in East Europe and Asia. The territory of Russia is 17 075 000 square kilometers. There are 9 time zones in Russia, when it is noon in Europe, it 14.00 in Moscow and St. Petersburg, 17.00 in Irkutsk, 19.00 in Vladivostok. Russia borders on Northern Korea (DPRK) in the south-east, China, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Georgia in the south, Ukraine in the south-west, Belarus, Latvia, Estonia, Finland and Norway in the west, Kaliningrad Region borders on Lithuania and Poland. About 3/4 of Russia’s territory consists of plains. The highest mountain is Mount Elbrus (5642 meters). The biggest rivers are Volga, Don, Irtysh, Ob, Angara, Yenissei, Lena, and Amur. The largest lakes are the Caspian Sea, Lake Baikal (the world’s deepest lake, which contains 23 cubic kilometers of water), Lake Onega and Lake Ladoga.
The population of Russia is 145 million people with its density 9 people per square kilometer. Russians make up the largest ethnic group (81% of all the country’s population). There are about 100 nationalities altogether in Russia: Tatars, Ukrainians, Byelorussians, Jews, Armenians and others.

The official language is Russian.

Orthodoxy dominates among the religions, but some Russians profess Islam, Catholicism, Judaism, and Buddhism (In Buryatia, Kalmykia, and Republic Tuva).

The climate in Russia is continental practically all over its territory, especially in East Siberia where season temperature drops are very strong. In the Far East and at the Black Sea coast the climate is temperate, maritime. In southern regions of the Far East the influence of the Pacific Ocean makes the climate monsoon.

The average temperature in Moscow in January is – 16 – 18 °C, in July + 13 + 23 °C. The average temperature in Irkutsk in December is – 20 – 25 °C, in June + 18 +23 °C. The average temperature at Lake Baikal in December is – 12 – 15 °C, in June + 15 + 18

The capital of Russia is Moscow. Moscow is the administrative, cultural and historic centre. With its population 10 million people (6% of the whole country’s population) it is three times larger than Los Angeles. It is the largest city in Europe and one of the largest cities in the world. Like Rome and Lisbon Moscow has been built on 7 hills. There are about one hundred parks and sixty gardens in Moscow.

The cultural heritage of Russia amounts over 110 thousand history and architecture monuments most of them have no analogs in the world. As for Russia’s natural places of interest, these are the Black Sea, Lake Baikal, Caucasian and Altai mountains, Kamchatka peninsula, the Far East and many other places, which attract tourists from all over the world!!!
